Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in October 2026

October brings several critical tax deadlines for individuals. Key dates to watch include the final extended deadline for 2025 individual income tax returns, foreign financial account reporting, and monthly requirements for those who receive tip income.

October 13: Reporting Tip Income

Employees who work for tips and received more than $20 in tip income during September must report this amount to their employer by October 13. You can use IRS Form 4070 or provide your own signed statement. If you create your own statement, it must include your signature, name, address, Social Security number, the employer’s name (or establishment name) and address, the specific month or period covered, and the total tips received during that timeframe.

Once reported, your employer is required to withhold FICA and income taxes for these tips from your regular wages. If your regular paycheck is insufficient to cover the FICA and tax withholding, the employer will report the uncollected amount in box 8 of your W-2 for the year. You will be responsible for paying this uncollected withholding when you file your annual tax return.

October 15: Extended Individual Tax Returns

Taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension for their 2025 income tax return must file Form 1040 by October 15. Any outstanding tax, interest, and penalties due should also be paid at this time.

October 15: Foreign Financial Account Reporting

If you hold foreign financial interests and received an automatic six-month extension to report your 2025 accounts to the Department of the Treasury, October 15 is your final due date to file Form FinCEN 114.

Weekends and Legal Holidays

When a standard tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is automatically extended to the next business day that is not a legal holiday.

Disaster Area Extensions

Due dates are automatically extended for taxpayers living in geographically designated disaster areas. To verify whether your location has been designated as a disaster area and to find specific filing extension dates, consult the following resources:
